Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) are crucial facilities for municipal waste recycling. They primarily handle mixed or single-type recyclable waste, enabling its reuse through sorting and separation processes, thus achieving resource recycling.
MRFs are sometimes also referred to as material recovery facilities or material recycling facilities. Understanding how MRFs operate helps in better understanding the actual operational logic of a recycling system. They play a vital role in the management of municipal solid waste and commercial waste, and are an important component of urban environmental protection.
Main Applicable Materials for MRFs
The core function of an MRF is to receive, sort, and process recyclable materials to meet reuse standards.
Materials it handles include: cardboard, paper, plastics, glass, and metals.
MRFs use a combination of mechanical sorting equipment and manual sorting stations to precisely separate mixed municipal waste, preparing it for subsequent recycling.

MRF Process Flow
After entering the hopper, mixed municipal solid waste is conveyed by a chain feeder to a bag-breaking machine to remove packaging bags. It then enters a 30/50mm aperture drum screen to separate fine materials from coarse materials.
Fine materials go through magnetic separation to remove metallic impurities, and the rest are stored for subsequent recycled aggregate processing. Coarse materials first enter an air separator to separate light and heavy materials, which then go to a manual sorting station to remove large debris and non-recyclable hazardous materials, separating into light materials and heavy materials.
Unusable light materials for RDF fuel rods are baled; usable ones undergo magnetic separation, shredding, and RDF forming. Heavy materials are inspected, crushed and screened into reusable recycled aggregates.

Summary
Material recycling facilities (MRFs) are crucial infrastructure for achieving urban resource recycling. Through a systematic sorting and processing flow, MRFs transform scattered waste into renewable industrial raw materials. For businesses and urban development, understanding how MRFs operate helps in more scientific participation in waste sorting and improves overall recycling efficiency.
